Do you ever find yourself frantically searching for your house keys, only to come up empty handed? If so, you’re not alone. Every day, students across the country are misplacing their house keys. Whether it’s accidentally leaving them at a friend’s house or forgetting them in a backpack, keys have a tendency to find their way to the most unlikely places. In this blog post, we’ll take a look at the top ten places students misplace their house keys.
In the pocket of your jacket
Have you ever checked the pockets of your jacket for your keys? Jackets are often a great place to store and quickly access your keys, especially if you’re in a rush. It’s an easy life hack that can save you a lot of time and energy.
However, it’s also a common place to misplace your keys if you don’t check thoroughly. If you ever find yourself in a hostel or with friends in need of your keys, checking the pocket of your jacket is usually the first thing you should do. It can give you a sense of freedom and add to the relaxed vibe of your surroundings.
If you’ve been out on the town or at a party, it’s easy to forget to take your keys out of your pocket when you get home. Make sure to keep an eye out and check yourself before putting your jacket away – you’ll thank yourself later!
On your desk
The classic! We’ve all been there: you come home from a long day of classes and a night out with friends, ready to settle into your hostel for the night. You take off your backpack, and realize you don’t remember the last time you saw your house keys. You frantically search around, until you remember- they were on your desk when you left this morning! Even though it’s not exactly the most creative life hack, sometimes having your keys on your desk can be a great way to ensure that you always have access to your freedom, no matter what kind of vibe you’re feeling.
In the laundry
A common spot to lose things is in the laundry, or perhaps mixed up in the wash! You can take a few extra precautions to avoid losing your keys in the laundry. First and foremost, never put anything with your keys in the pockets of your pants or other clothing items – no matter how small or how tempted you may be. A good life hack is to store your keys in a special pocket or pouch that you keep outside of the laundry. That way, you can be sure that if something does go missing during the wash cycle, it won’t be your keys!
Under your bed
One of the most common places we find ourselves misplacing our house keys is under our beds. Whether it was dropped there while rushing out the door, or intentionally placed for ‘safe keeping’, sometimes this can be the trickiest place to check when searching for lost keys. Here’s a life hack for all you forgetful key-losers: take some masking tape and place it on your night stand (or wherever it’s visible) with the words “Don’t forget your keys!” written on it. Then, next time you’re tempted to leave your house keys under your bed, you’ll have a reminder not to do so!
In your purse/bag
This is a common hiding spot for keys, and one that many of us fail to remember when it comes to life hacks. It’s important to have a designated place in your purse or bag for your keys, so you know exactly where to look every time you need them. If you’re an especially forgetful person, consider attaching a carabiner or keychain to your purse or bag and looping it around your keys. That way, you can easily locate them when they inevitably end up in the abyss of your bag.
On the counter

The counter is a prime spot for people to set their belongings when they enter the house, especially keys. It can also be easy to forget they are there, so if you’re still searching for your missing keys, try checking the counter first. To help you remember where you left them, here’s a life hack: Before entering the house, say something out loud like “keys on the counter!”. This will serve as a reminder that you need to put your keys in the same spot every time you come home.
